Bleach alternative for septic tank

Post by Normandy Cow »

We have a septic tank and never put bleach down it.
Recently, the bottom of the toilet has developed a dark brown stain.
In the UK I would just pour in bleach and it would go overnight, but obviously I cannot do that here in France.

Can anyone recommend an alternative?

Thanks!

I use bleach, and we have a septic tank (well actually we have several but I don't like to boast  ). If you look in the supermarkets at the toilet cleaner you can use anything which says "sans danger pour fosse septique" which is most of them. Some of the ones with lots of bleach say not more than twice a week, so I use them on the weekly clean but don't leave them in the gites for the guests.

Other alternatives to remove the brown stains are PH minus (used in swimming pools), vinegar or coke. Don't however use hydrocloric acid which is sold for detartering as this will not do your fosse any good.

I use bleach in all my houses occasionally - to clean toilets especially. I always use a bleach spray for cleaning too (my T shirts bear testament to this.)

You can use those tablets that clean dentures - just drop on in...I use them all the time and they're fab!

Thanks everyone.
I'm home now (luckily we use Norfolkline ferries to Dunquerque so didn't get held up at Calais).

I've tried the sprays as suggested, and my cleaner is going to have another go next week - but I will also try that denture cleaner, that's a good bit of lateral thinking there mouse, it would never have occurred to me to try that (how on earth did you find that one out?!)

(how on earth did you find that one out?!)
It was in a book someone (who obviously thought I needed domesticating) bought me once for Christmas.
I actually found some useful tips in it, including one about chucking a can of coke cola down the loo to make it gleam! (works on white sinks too)
And if you ever have a rusty screw you can't remove with the screwdriver...put some cola on it and 5 mins later you'll be able to screw it out

Mouse (full of odd useful tips :? )

Bleach alternative for septic tank

Have never tried it on brown stains but white vinegar works on removing the blue stains we get on sanitary ware in the Limousin.

It is terrible stuff. Just put a coin in it and see. My daughter dropped a glass of cola on the floor the other day and after 7 washes the tiles still feel sticky.

Great! Can pop my teeth in at the same time, and save on tablets!
