After putting up with 17 winters living in SW France I've decided that enough is enough. With the prospect of off loading all work commitments at the end of the school term have decided to move south for January and February next year and would appreciate some destination ideas. Thinking, probably of Southern Spain or Portugal and ideally would like to be in a coastal town, not a holiday resort, that has some kind of cultural life and history. I'm not yet looking for a specific property, just some general thoughts . Many thanks!
Just read the weather posting, aaaagh!

You could consider Lagos in the Algarve or some of the nearby villages.

Tavira or the beautiful Sintra Natural Park, or Cascais...all in Portugal

Carvoeiro is nice, small village but lots of restaurants, bars, cafes, centrally located on the Algarve so you're only a couple of hours from anywhere and close to silves, monchique, portimao for history and sightseeing. We get a lot of snowbirds from Canada, Germany, holland and the uk so the place isn't deserted in winter (I'm a bit biased, we've holidayed here since the late 80s and moved permanently nearly 10 years ago!)

Our property is in Salema, 15 minutes drive from Lagos.

It is a picturesque fishing village, we love it Very Happy .

Thanks everyone. But villages, however attractive, are definitely not on the agenda for a winter stay.

Silves is quite nice - not too far from Portimao/Lagos etc. Far enough from the coast that it should be cheaper.
