Normally we put two bath sheets, one shower towel and a hand towel per couple. I put the shower towel mainly for the lady because I like to have a big towel to wrap round my wet hair. Plus everyone gets a big pool towel.

Now we have a small group (couple and three teenage boys) at a very heavily discounted price for nearly three weeks. I can't imagine that the boys will need the extra towel so am thinking that I can at least save a bit of washing. What do you think? I am not cutting down on any of my nice but not necessary stuff like welcome loaf of home made bread, marmalade etc.

I'm not clear how many you would have been providing for the 5, but I would provide 1 bath sheet and 1 hand towel per person. (Personally I wouldn't want to share a hand towel with my other half )

The boys get their own bath and hand towel and the parents get the usual two bath, one shower and one hand. I have always felt that having a shower towel meant I did not need to do a second hand towel but am willing to take guidance on this!

What is a shower towel? I provide 2 bath sheets (150 x 100cm) and 2 hand towels (50 x 90cm) which are perfect for drying hair. I bought some in the past which were smaller than that and not big enough to wrap round your head and that would have p****d me off as a guest.
I find that most of the time the hand towels I put out for children are never touched.

'Shower towels' sometimes called bath towels as opposed to bath sheets (which are usually at least 100 x 150cm). The smaller ones are usually 70x140-ish.

Probably 90x50 hand towels are big enough for most people for hair but I like them bigger myself - despite having very short hair!!

I have now got a large collection of 'shower towels' so will be using them till they are no longer usable but then may follow your example, LV

What I won't do is to substitute them for the bigger ones because I hate skimpy towels. Always my favourite complaint in French-run establishments in the past. Not only skimpy but no more drying power than a tea-towel!

I agree with Petitbois - I don't think they'll realise they're a towel down. We become very wedded to our routines - but of course, guests don't know what the routine is. For instance, I've stopped putting out waffle robes for guests who're only in for one night. It's not worth the extra washing and ironing. The guests don't realise because bath robes are not something I mention on the website or in any literature.

Towels seem very much a cultural thing. I put out a bath towel and a bath sheet per guest. There are hand towels on a hook adjacent to each basin too. Oh and a little gant (flannel) each.

I'm finding that continental guests don't like the bath sheets and only use the bath towels; British people use the bath sheets but often not the bath towels.

One group of Dutch people asked if I would wash their towel (and gants) each day because they preferred to use a small towel that was washed daily. So after re-explaining our green attitude to towels (changed after 3 days) we compromised on every other day - but in fact I did wash them every day because that was obviously their preferred routine and I don't like forcing guests into something they're not 100% comfortable with. The bath towels are for drying hair as I too hate hand towels for drying my hair - they're never big enough.

Well, just to be clear, continental in a towel context = French, Dutch, Belgian, Swiss and Italian. Oh and German somewhat - though I think I've detected a 50:50 breakdown of users / non-users there.

I put out a bath sheet, a hand towel and a bidet towel for each of my two guests. Bath robes are available on request but in 6 years have never been requested

I have cut down on towels recently but no one seems to have noticed. I now leave one bath towel and one hand towel each. if they want them washing they can do it as they have washing machine and a tumble dryer. I'm certainly not going to be washing them everyday.

This weeks guests told me they had washed the towels after their second day here. I said that was fine but didn't offer to do them for them. If people are here for over a week I do replace the them at the end of the week.

Yes, this is the norm. Some get used as face/hand towels and others aren't used at all.
