We run a busy rentals company and are based in Portugal - our email address for the purpose of this discussion is ourcompanyname.com and all our staff have email addresses that are firstname@ourcompanyname.com we don't use any other mail system.
We were contacted by a seemingly genuine UK Based client (her initials are ST) further down the booking discussion line she started to receive emails from someone at ourcompanyname@hotmail.com asking for payment and requesting a transfer into a bank account in Spain.
The question is how did someone break into the communication chain? We have checked all PC's at our end so it could be some kind of trojan at the client end?
Luckily this has been spotted and no money paid but understandably the client is now nervous about booking with anyone at all !
Has this happened to anyone else and who should it be reported to other than Hotmail which has already been done.

Did the emails from Hotmail include text from your own previous emails? If so, it would sound like someone has access to your email account and you've either been a victim of phishing, or as you say, there's a problem on the PC of the client where someone else can see the emails.
I regularly receive spam emails from previous clients who obviously have infected machines spewing out junk to all their contacts.
You should obviously change your own emails passwords but you also need to explain to your client how to check for viruses and malware. If she gets scammed, she'll unfairly blame you.
