Domain name search engine registration scam

Post by AngloDutch »

Over the past few days we have been adding some new domain names to our websites and this evening we received the following email, which we at first thought was because we hadn't confirmed our correspondence email address for this particular domain name.
This we had to do with all the .com domain names we purchased and the domain name mentioned in the email just received is actually one of the domains we have secured.
At first we thought it was another email validation request from our provider on behalf of ICANN (International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), but we are so on the alert for phishing, scam, and spam emails that we treat every email we receive now as such until proved otherwise.
A quick search on Google shows that this is quite an old scam. The contents of the email doesn't seem to have been changed in several years:

It seems that scammers know when a domain has been purchased and using the open registration details (including your email address), will use your own name to make you believe that the request is genuine (they will also show the actual domain name that you have purchased as well).

So, if you have recently acquired a new domain name, watch out for these email scams and don't give your credit card details!

I had the exact same thing for a domain name that was due for renewal but I no longer owned.
