Join the local on line "Streetlife" for the area. It's a great way to ask questions and gain local knowledge
I would advise caution about using Streetlife to find contractors. As a remote owner I am signed up to Streetlife at home and have read several "staged" enquiries and responses in order for people to gain work.

For example one staged "conversation" concerned contractors who regularly work together recommending each other as individuals to be contacted for work but personal names were used so you didn't realise they had a business connection. It was written as though the contractors were satisfied customers.

Obviously you'd need to check the recommendations before employing people but it's a very useful way to hear what is going on when you're new to an area.
