From another Forum:

Those of you who use AVG Free V 7 can download the new Version 8 from http://free.grisoft.com/

Note that you must uninstall the old version before installing the new one. This can be done in Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs (their spelling, not mine)

Failure to do so can cause problems.

Another post advises that the new edition crashed when trying to autoremove the old version.

The free version's been working very well for me and so far I've resisted the urge to send them any money Wink , fortunately by the sound of it!

Morning MG,

I tried to download AVG 8 last night, without removing the old one. After about 30% downloaded it collapsed on me.

I was going to try again today, so thanks for the info.

With 6 or 7 laptops and PCs around, of varying vintages, I felt having at least one paid AVG installation was worth it, for the tech support.

Just downloaded the AVG 8 free version last week after looking for it for a couple of days as the old version really played up. Don't know if I was lucky but it installed itself and in the process and deleted the old version just fine, so depending on your system you may not need to delete the old version first.

Every communication I get from AVG, and I get one every day, tells me that AVG 8 is not free; it’s €51.74 for a year. Can you give me a link to a free version of AVG 8?

http://free.grisoft.com/

NB If you've got AVG Antirootkit installed it will remove it when you install AVG AV 8. And you can't reinstall it.

So when AVG 8 came out I moved to Avast's freeware.

http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html

Why? Because Avast includes AV and ASpy (like AVG) but Antirootkit as well. Possibly the only Antirootkit available free for Vista users?

I was thinking of changing to Avast. I think I will now, although I don't have Vista.

Maybe check whether they offer reasonable support?

See what the geek forums think about it?

We all use this stuff, but how often, when things go wrong, do we contact their support setup?

Avast and AVG are the two most heavily supported and popular free packages. Both have their supporters. Having used both, I reckon there's nothing to choose between them other than the Avast Rootkit protection.

Spybot can be added to either of them as additional spyware protection, just in case anything squeezes between the cracks.

Having looked more closely at the Grisoft update notice I find that there is a free version of AVG8.

I upgraded my laptop this morning and by following the instructions everything went perfectly including the automatic uninstall of AVG7.5. One point to note is that it is necessary to update the virus database otherwise Windows tells you that your antivirus isn’t working.

Now for my two desktops. Let’s hope those upgrades go equally smoothly.

Very slight topic redirect:

How does anyone know that one AV system is better at protecting one ?

I recently switched from Norton to AVG, and while AVG is certainly less intrusive I still get the same number of virus attacks - i.e. zero.

As far as I can tell, its working as well as my elephant defender - That 's a large plastic box in my living room and having installed it, we have not seen any elephants in our living room. Confused

Jokes aside, my question is genuine.
