Question for you cleaning fairies - I have a shower (just one of them, most bizarre) that has limescale buildup in all the grooves and on the first line of tiles - I've tried vinegar, but it doesn't work - viakal, same. I have used Hydrochloric acid, but it makes me wheeze, and my fosse septique doesn't like it either. Any tips?

I cleaned the wall in a couple of minutes, but there was some 'suitcase' marks on the wall by the door that I couldn't get off. Neither our Carrefour or Casino/Geant had any . Are they still available? I want to ask M to try and get some to clean the marks off before the ski season.

I don't know about the Vigor brand, but I got some Super U own brand ones, called Gomme Traces et Taches - these seem to work really well, but I'm afraid I can't compare to the Vigor ones because I've never been able to find them.

Thanks, we don't have a Super U near by, and there were certainly no 'own brand' ones in Casino or Carrefour, but I'll keep looking. I can take some UK ones out with me, but that will mean dirty walls to commence the season.

For those with woodburner glass to clean, the most radical and effective cleaning method is to use some caustic soda crystals (most decent hardware shops) with some water and a rag or kitchen towel.

If the deposit has got to the stage that you can't see much fire, a stronger caustic soda solution will shift it easily. But it's nasty stuff so you should wear gloves and glasses of eye protectors. You should never need to have it as concentrated that it is as unpleasant as old style paint stripper.

Tea bags and other cleaning methods that I know do not come near this one.

For wood burner glass, we just use a specialised spray from Intermarche - easy and effective.

I go in with a can of paint after nearly every let as our staircase is narrow and people make 'suitcase' marks bashing them against the sides. I have tried various products but I haven't been able to clean them off. The paint covers them in a jiffy. Perhaps your apartment manager could do that for you Helen?

Felicity, I doubt very much that I could get her to get out a tin of paint every time, she would see that as part of an end of season deep clean, which is my job to get done. After all she hadn't cleaned the kitchen wall in the first place but suggested my hubby might like to repaint as it was looking 'tired' . A quick wipe with a kitchen spray and a cloth was all it needed.

On the woodburner glass theme, before resorting to caustic soda try HG Stove Glass Cleaner. We have three woodburners to clean, (not including our own, but they don't get cleaned Embarassed

) and in two years or more of using the HG stuff we've never had to do more than spray on, wait and rub off with paper towel. We started off using the Hotspot stuff, which was next to useless even with a Stanley scraper blade.

Help! Just had a call from the cleaner who's found several large black marks on one of the bedroom carpets which she thinks may be Halloween make up. She's tried the usual 1001 carpet spray but no luck so far. A towel also had to be trashed. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is one of the last bookings I have via an agency so I'm not even holding a deposit from which I might deduct something. She's put a rug over it for the time being (which may turn out to be a long term fixture). Not very happy...

For a stove all you need to do is light a fire and keep the intake open. It will burn it off. We occasionally use a newspaper and some ash for the bits round the edges.
