Does this sound odd?

Post by brightmike »

I have a request that starts:

"Hi there, my boyfriend and I are working professionals. I am a solicitor working in an award winning regional firm whilst my boyfriend works in a large brokerage firm in Canary Wharf."

Is that too much information?

It had not crossed my mind to even look for scams until I read this forum so perhaps I am seeing one around every corner?

Might be. Might not be. Every enquiry is a potential scam. Oh the dilemma.

It's certainly too much info but doesn't necessarily mean a scam.

Could just be building up to ask for a discount as they're such delightful professional people who will look after your place as if it were their own - iykwim?

I get lots of people that give me "too much info". I think perhaps because of my style of listings. I would look on this as somebody who is reassuring you that they are 'OK' people to rent to. I have voted not a scam/spam.

But then again. I could be wrong

PS. I voted SCAM.

Maybe I´m a little bit paranoid in the mean time?

I agree it sounds like a very strange approach indeed. It doesn't really seem 'natural'. I would be suspicious, but of course I would reply because they could just be a very young couple who don't know that you really aren't required to preface holiday rental enquiries in this way.

SCAM: if not would you really want such boastful people staying in your property. They seem horrible. Why do they need to tell you what their professions are.
Would love to retire but can't so will have to keep doing the lottery!

I think they're young and want to reassure you that as they are working professionals, they'd take good care of your property.

What's the harm in going forward to the next step?

Its the next email that will confirm scam or not and you can easily ignore the offer to send 250% of your rental

If they had just said they were a solicitor and a broker I wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

My cynical head replies:

"Dear xxx

My cottage has never won an award and does not form part of a regional portfolio of cottages. It is not large, in fact it is quite small, therefore I am sure it would be a huge disappointment to you, therefore I regret it is currently unavailable."

But for now I would just politely reply and see what happens. 50/50 IMO.
