Shame on you, Andrew! How many years have you been there?
We arrived in 2008 with a smattering of useful (useless? "Perhaps you have 6 eggs?" !!) phrases courtesy of a "Get by in Greek" BBC language cassette (yes, one of those old antiquated things), and then took a Greek course - well, we forced the village school (area high school) to put on a course - and followed that by a load of private lessons tutored by the local retired (and as we now find out, very popular with his ex Cypriot pupils) teacher. We do all our shopping in Greek, as much as possible, and generally get greeted with "how long have you been here? My friend has been here for 20 years and only says hello!"
Having a smattering of Greek (we are by no means fluent) has certainly oiled the wheels for us, particularly in government offices - but that's another story or three!
