| I just keep the cookies (9 in total at the moment) that store my passwords to various sites (this one included) to save remembering and typing in user names and passwords. I don't keep any bank website cookies. Apart from that it's safe to delete all cookies and frees up a little bit of space. I run C Cleaner once a day and it gets rid of all the temporary internet files as well. |

I'm curious about two new features of AVG using their version 8.0.
1) I've been using it less than a week, and have had 3 virus warnings, compared with zero over the last 12 months. Is it the sites I'm visiting or is AVG 8.0 more sensitive?
2) We have a never-ending battle to keep on Page 1 Google for the keywords swiss chalet rental - this morning we were no. 3 page 1 and this evening bottom of page 2 (on one of our listing sites), but, and this is more interesting, one of ours competitors is being single out by a new feature of AVG (unless I've missed it before) - the green tick or red cross against the entries on the Google results.
The red cross means (according to AVG):
Dangerous: This page contains active threats.
Risk Category: Exploit
Risk Name: Link to known exploit site
Explanation:
This page contains a link to a known exploit site.
Domain:
IP Address: 66.96.132.63
Owner:
Name:
Address:
Country Code:
Scanned on: 06/15/08 21:50:10
(10.08 seconds to scan this page)
Ratings are provided by AVG. Site owners please contact AVG Technologies for questions.
3) And this sometimes appears on the same site:
Danger: AVG Search-Shield has detected active threats on this page and has blocked access for your protection.
The page you are trying to access has been identified as a known exploit, phishing, or social engineering web site and therefore has been blocked for your safety. Without protection, such as that in the AVG Security Toolbar and AVG, your computer is at risk of being compromised, corrupted or having your identity stolen. Please follow one of the suggestions below to continue.
IP Address: 66.96.132.63
For additional information click here.
Suggestions:
§ Click the “Back” button on your browser to return to the previous page and choose another link (recommended).
§ If you would like to ignore the warning and continue to the page, click here (not recommended)
Has anyone else seen this? Is it serious? What does it mean?

OK, so now I'm happy that can zap all my cookies. I assume the same is true of my temporary internet files ... ? And does software like CCleaner have an advantage over doing the zapping manually?
Like the intro to this section says - I use this stuff but don't always understand it. Thanks guys for info.

Dunno, good question, LV.
What I do know is that AVG 8.0 is earning its keep - and capturing and slaughtering virii left, right and centre, which begs the question what was AVG 7.0 doing when it was in charge?
It's finding 'infections' on our WordPress backups and will ask WP Forum what this means. My WP host set-up is virus-ridden? Not a clue.
And, just for anyone still struggling with download after download of AVG 8.0 Free with corrupt files, I switched from Firefox to IE and worked OK first time. Next step is the paid version for our master PC.

As advised, I zapped my 1600 cookies on Thursday. 24 hours later, 17 new cookies had jumped on board. Intriguingly, several of these appear to have come from websites that I hadn't visited. Did a bit of research to find that:

T-P put me onto ccleaner a few weeks ago and it does an excellent job. You can set it for what you want to delete, temp internet files, cookies, internet cache, browsing history etc. It also does a registry cleanup which is good too. I only run it once a week. |
I don't seem to be able to get past the payment screen for the free download of CCleaner. Did you pay the £25 for it LV? _________________ Kathy

I don't find that at all. For me a full system scan using v8 doesn’t produce a single virus which was not found when I was using v7. What I do find with v8 is that it lists all tracking cookies which v7 did not list.
I have three PC’s on-line all the time and over the last two years I have only received a "virus attack" on a very few occasions. They have all come from the same source so I have set my e-mail system to reject all messages from that particular source.
la vache!
Apart from possibly being more selective about what is to be deleted and the dangerous bit of tinkering with one’s registry does Ccleaner really do anything which can’t be done using the tools built into IE?

One answer could be you don't have one? It has been known.
MG |
That is the answer; I do not have a virus on my system.
One difference between v7 and v8 is that v8 reports "tracking cookies". Some people seem to think that finding tracking cookies is the same thing as finding viruses, or virii, but it isn’t.

Alan, nothing earth-shattering so far - is there something I'm missing? I was going to test out their tech support, but haven't anything to ask them yet.

I haven't tried the paid for version so I don't know what extras it might have or how it performs as compared with the free version.

Can you, for example, customize the scannable directories ?
I have some exceedingly large directories which take hours to scan, yet never change or are touched from week to week.
Perhaps other customizable features ? _________________ ** Richard
