Can you, for example, customize the scannable directories ?

I have some exceedingly large directories which take hours to scan, yet never change or are touched from week to week.

Perhaps other customizable features ?

Even in the free version one can specify which files and folders should be scanned.

Thanks Alan, but I give up...... where ?

I've found places that let me click "change scan settings", but nothing takes me to a folder selection process.

Open AVG User Interface.

Click on "Computer scanner". You are given two options -"Scan whole computer" and "Scan specific files or folders". Beneath each option you are given the opportunity to change scan settings.

Click on the option you want and follow the instructions displayed. Stage 2 in changing the options for scanning specific files or folders allows you to list the required files and folders.

I finally managed it using the link from their own server, see this page: AVG Free Download and use the small link marked - Download AVG Free 8.0 (AVG server) rather than the prominent blue download link - it worked first time.

Thanks MG for a 'top tip'

I've just dowloaded version 8 first time, no probs.

I'm really pleased I stumbled across this thread and am grateful yet again to my fellow LMHers who have imparted a little of their immense knowledge.

My version 7.5 had been telling me for a while that it was 'out of date', but of course it was not made clear how to update without spending a few pennies (or cents).
I shall look forward to giving it a spin in the morning when my eyes are a little less weary

Many thanks to you all Very Happy .

Alan, thanks for taking the time to spell it out, but actually stage 2 doesn't show anything that allows directory selection.

However, what I wanted is available from the main menu
tools > scan selected folder...

So alls well. Almost. Cannot now seem to find a way to SAVE my selection.

I get tech support, being apparently the only person on the planet to have a paid version.

If you ask me nicely I'll ask them? Laughing

Richard,

In Stage 2 press “NEXT”. You will be presented with a screen with the heading “Select specific files or folders for scanning”. It shows a complete structure of your system and you can expand and contract any part of it and make your selections from it. You can for instance select only the C:\ drive or you can expand the C:\ drive and select any folder or even any file from within it. You then press “Start Scan”. The choices you make are saved for the next session or you can make different choices by taking the same route when you run your next session. You should play with it. You will find it is totally flexible. You can decide to scan anything from your whole system right down to one individual file.

Who needs AVG support when you have AK around.

Cannot believe how blind (and stupid) I've been. Thanks Alan.

Which of course, brings us back to the original question, what additional features (if any) do you get with the paid-for version ?

You can have a guilt-free night's sleep not worrying about not contributing to their multi-billion empire - it's rumoured they're owned by Vistaprint. Laughing

There I can't help you because I don't have it but MG can help you because she does have it.

If an apology is due then MG has mine. I can never tell the difference when people don't use proper names.

In trying to answer the question about the difference between AVG Free and the next version up-the-scale, this page seems to have the info (and clicking on Why You Need to Upgrade has a bit more).

It makes a convincing case for upgrading as I hadn't realised that downloads aren't immediately virus-checked, but I assume one could do a manual check. Not quite sure how that would work with downloading a zipped program - expand first then use AVG to scan? Sounds tedious.
