Other than that, I wondered if any of you gurus could offer me some advice on the sort of minimum spec you would go for? Professional use, mainly word processing. Oh, and a little bit of Internet-ing, too...
Any thoughts, please? Keen to hear your tips....

The coolest laptop around by a million light years is the superslim MacBook Air. Even if you had no use for a laptop, you'd die for one of these. Our friend Leanne has one in purest white ...

The Sony Vaio CR series comes in pink, and is about 800 euros for a 14" screen. I understand Vaio used to be a sexy brand, and it is helpfully writ large on the lid so people know who they are dealing with. _________________ Paolo

That is seriously cool kit, Jim, and very tempted....but the euro equivalent of USD 1,799 seems an awful lot to shell out on a laptop with only one USB port and no CD/DVD drive (sold as an accessory ). Does come with arsenic-free glass monitor, though, which strikes me as a must-have.
Nick - those Asus models caught my eye, too. Fantastic handbag accessory (not for you, obviously) And, hey, guess what? Available in Blush Pink . XP compatible, too.
Sony Vaio? Mmmm - I'm getting bad vibes..... _________________ R is a velocity measure defined as a reasonable speed of travel consistent with health, mental wellbeing and not being more than say five minutes late. Just treated myself to one Martha, and it went to France with me recently. A joy, now we have Wi-Fi.
A big plus of all Macs has always been their low risk of viruses as you probably know RR.
Doesn't come in pink though - maybe Mouse can advise on pink laptops? _________________ http://www.facebook.com/Gascony.Magic?ref=ts

Apparently Mac’s and Linux boxes don’t get many virus attacks; why would that be? Maybe it’s because the people who write viruses want to cause the maximum amount of inconvenience to the maximum number of users. They’re not going to waste their time in doing that by attacking fringe minorities, are they?
As a matter of fact rather than fiction - as a matter of personal experience rather than learning by listening to others - I run three PC’s all of which are logged-on all day every day and in the last two years I have had one and only one virus attack which was immediately identified by AVG and it was totally and automatically dealt with.
My big problem is that only one of my PC’s is a laptop and none of them is pink.

Not your colour, perhaps, Alan?
Many thanks to BS for her pink link... (ooops, BS? It's disappeared?). I never realised there was so much choice. Obviously no longer a market niche. Actually, I may have innocently given the impression that *pink* is a dealbreaker... specs could swing it, too, I hasten to add..
The virus issue is a powerful argument, GG, but not quite sure it could tempt me over to the Mac camp. There are some very happy converts around, though, and this interesting comparison seems to hint that Mac users may not remain a minority for much longer.....
The Air is beautiful, but it's not for everyone....
Are you in marketing, Martha? I'm intrigued...who is the Air aimed at? And will it have a starring role in the next James Bond...? _________________ R is a velocity measure defined as a reasonable speed of travel consistent with health, mental wellbeing and not being more than say five minutes late. hehe - probably!
What that article says has been true for a long time though. At the top end, they aren't significantly more, and haven't been for ages. Of course PCs are cheaper, but the spec isn't the same. You can make this comparison in loads of different ways though, with correspondingly varying results!
The Air wouldn't be a good choice to be your only machine though. It's intended for people who are almost always in a wifi enabled zone - so most of your data is kept remotely, either online (e.g. flickr, itunes store) or on your regular desktop, which it connects to.
I expect a lot of image - conscious companies will like them for account managers, project managers, sales people etc. If you are working for yourself and/or travelling a lot, they're great as they are so light. But to really get the best out of it and make it practical, you'd need to be online all the time, and have a second machine.
I think they're great, but nowhere near powerful enough for me. Nick might get one soon though, for use on shoots - just for organisational stuff. _________________ Chamonix Chalet : La Foret, Les Praz |

| We're looking at the Air mainly because Kevin travels so much and this is super light and portable. And I am a Mac convert!!! |

Perhaps Macs are better for some users than for others. What are PCs better at? That sounds disingenuous, but I'm not technically skilled and I'd be interested to know. _________________ http://www.facebook.com/Gascony.Magic?ref=ts

PC's aren't better than MACs or Unix boxes for anything, in the same way as MACs or Unix boxes aren't better than a PC, they all run pretty much the same applications & I, for one, can't type any quicker on PC than I can a Unix box or MAC.
Where PCs do win out is the amount of software available for them, & the availability of 3rd party hardware but if all you want is to write a letter or e-mail & browse the web it makes no difference.
Traditionally MACs have been used in the Graphics & Printing industries & because users are used to the User Interface they keep an advantage in those industries.
I feel MACs are more of a fashion statement for most users, I always find it interesting that the Personal Computer used in most films & TV programs is a MAC, whereas in the 'real world' they have less than 10% of the market. _________________ "Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools."
