Thanks for that TTP - I thought it might just be down to the software issue, so really, they appeal to slightly different markets and that's it. Apart from looking so cool though, I have heard that Macs are more intuitive, and from my very limited experience of PCs I'd say that was so, but my perception may just be down to the fact that I'm less used to PCs! _________________ http://www.facebook.com/Gascony.Magic?ref=ts

Actually I started out on Macs but then when schools started to manage their own budgets we were given PCs to do that and it it was harder then to share documents etc so I switched to PCs. I am very comfortable with my decisions but I don't want to be sanctimonious about them- doesn't mean anyone else's are wrong just horses for courses. The appeal of the Air Mac for us is portability as I said - often K could have managed with hand baggage but then the PC takes up the weight.

That Eee PC looks interesting too.

I think it's what you are used to, I find MACs very difficult, in the same way as I find a Graphical User Interface on a Unix box almost impossible to work with, whereas I have no problems with a Unix Terminal. _________________ "Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools."

You're so right Nick! It would help if I knew what they looked like first of course! _________________ http://www.facebook.com/Gascony.Magic?ref=ts

In the same way as I thought Chelsea Tractors were fashion statements until we got one.

As soon as the 20 Gb one becomes available in the UK, as I said, I'm getting one.

| We know the (military) engineer who is responsable for maintenance on all of the computers used by the French navy (no jokes, please). They are all PCs - not chosen by our friend, who finds them unreliable, unpleasing to use & virus-prone. He won"t let a PC in his house: the family uses Macs only. He has a theory that Macs appeal to a more intelligent market, which is why only a small elite group uses them. |

I recently tested out an Air in an Apple store, and ... well, actually I wasn't that impressed. The tapered edges give it a sense of being paper-thin, but the whole thing was much thicker than I thought it was going to be. Not a lot thinner than my inexpensive, multi-USB+ethernet ports, big-HD MacBook.
| Quote: | | I feel MACs are more of a fashion statement for most users, I always find it interesting that the Personal Computer used in most films & TV programs is a MAC, whereas in the 'real world' they have less than 10% of the market. |
The appearance of more and more Macs on entertainment programs is no doubt a symbiotic relationship. Apple is likely happy to pay for this form of advertising, and because Macs are so beautifully designed from an aesthetic point of view, the movie or TV show has a chic, attractive prop instead of a dull gray box.
Anyway, I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with using a Mac partially for aesthetic reasons. I spend a large part of my day on a computer, and it's nice to be able to do it on something that's designed well inside and out. Pretty things make me happy, and things that work make me happy, and with a Mac I get both.
I was a Mac person back when Windows 3.1 was brand new, and I eventually converted to PC for financial and software reasons. But now that Macs have come down in price and their software options have expanded dramatically (unless you're a video gamer, that is), I've switched back.
For me, OS X has the added (enormous, from my perspective) benefit of being based on Unix, which is what all the analysis tools in my field are written for. I don't mind Linux, but using a Mac is worlds better than a dual boot system.
And, Nick, you do know that you can do everything in OS X from the terminal if you prefer it that way, right? _________________ Brooke |

The only thing I'd add :
It's an abbreviaton, not an acronym. Mac, not MAC.

Couldn't agree more. When your work involves using 'tools' of one sort of another, if they are well-designed, beautiful and (most important) reliable, it's a pleasure to use them. And, if you have your own business, you can buy the tools that make you happy.
For 15 years, I used a Hasselblad 6x6 camera outfit, truly a shining example of form follows function. You started with a cube-shaped camera body and then added only the viewfinders, lenses, motordrives and accessories that suited your particular workload. You ended up with a camera designed for you alone - a grown-up and professional concept. If your workload changed, you could adapt the system. Sadly, all swept away before the digital juggernaut. Now, I have cameras loaded with features and programmes that I will never use.
Leanne's (who has the Air) husband has the MacBook and it's a fine and more powerful tool. But the purest white Air is just so achingly beautiful. The Air looks as if it's just touched down briefly on Earth to bring joy to its people before it continues its endless odessy across the universe.

Oh good! I don't feel quite so "guilty" about wanting something pretty, now. Well, after all, PC and I do spend a lot of time together....
As a second-best to the Mac Air, I'm thinking of going for this, which is stuffed with 4 GB of Ram, a 500 GB hard disk and 4 USB ports....and reasonably easy on the eyes... Or I could get the same one with 2 GB of Ram and 250 GB hard disk for about 300 euros less...

Rab, you might be pushed to use 500Gb, and you could always use the difference to get a good (and tiny) external USB plug-in hard-drive, which would be useful for backups, or when you're away from home.
What about deals on extended guarantee/insurance etc.?
You've checked weight and size?
There was a sexy Sony I saw over the weekend for £500 (Sterling), 2Gb / 250Gb - might be worth a look? I'll get the link.

I bought a Packard Bell once, I wouldn't recommend them. It's also overpowered if you only want it for email and internet browsing. Plus it's not pink! _________________ Paolo

So did I. Once is enough. I realised after 3 days that their technical support was a mirage and depended (3 years ago) on their user-forum (which made LMH's occasional nadir look like a vicar's tea party).
