Yes, I am referring to a single column with a small blade at the end that you can put into a saucepan to blend the vegetables into a soup. I think that a blender can only be used with its own bowl.

Thanks Alexia, now I understand. It's called a hand blender here and sometimes has attachments for whisking and chopping as well. The type with a fixed blade for juicing and making drinks is called a jug blender. One day, I'm going to put an American/English dictionary on my site. A kettle is an electric jug, but you have to be careful here about using the plural version of the word jug because that it more commonly understood to mean the bumps on the front of your chest...
