A BIC number is usually an extra number that you have to use with your bank details when the transfer/ wire is international.
It is the international identification number for your bank's branch.

If someone form Germany is trying to pay you via bank transfer they will need your BIC number, sometimes also called SWIFT or SWIFT/BIC (8 characters) as well as your IBAN (all 22 characters). These numbers usually appear on your printed bank statements.

I have sometimes found that German banks also require your bank name and address.

I agree about giving your address. My bank always asks for the address associated with the account. I think it is an extra safeguard against the wire going into the wrong bank account.

Actually I think e-Richard refers to the bank's branch address.
I write:
Account Holder's Name:
Bank name:
Bank address:
Account No:
I-BAN:
BIC / Swift code:

Sort of Off Topic, but when sending info be wary about being asked for passport details.

The IBAN number already includes the SWIFT / BIC details so, for intra European transfers, the IBAN alone should be sufficient.
