Creating headers

Post by la vache! »

A dumb question from a novice - what software can I use to create a nice header for a site? Is there free or very cheap software available I can download to do this?

Susan, I use Photoshop but I'm seeing more references these days to free GNU program called GIMP:

http://www.gimp.org/

I haven't tried it yet myself. Let me know how you get on.

Hi

http://www.irfanview.com is a free graphics program. You can edit photos, add text etc.

Thanks to you both Garri & Peter, I already use Ifanview for editing photos, wasn't quite clever enough to realise there was a text function too. I will give gimp.org a go too.

Hi

if you create a shim.gif (i.e. transparent space, you can fill it with lots of interesting things !)

simple stuff but I've only recently started doing it

as soon as you have your header and menus final, add it to your pages with an as 'include' so all the pages load the same file, it'll pay dividends right from the word go

it'll need to be on a server that runs server side includes mind but it's nothing that clever

HPH, please could you explain what the dividends would be using this technique for the header?

What would you attempt to do if you knew you would not fail?

If you need to change anything, just as your menus, you change it once in the 'header.html' file, all the other pages have a single line of code that sucks that html into that file

So your html files are all smaller, quicker to upload and take less space on your server

any code that is duplicated over more than one page should be an include really, your header is an important part of your site and something you're liable to tinker with from time to time, an include forit makes it easy and quick and efficient

I coulda cried the first time I made changes after setting it like that

Aha - I thought you were talking about the header (logo) for your site.

If it is one of the menus then yes page-includes would be a big benefit if you wanted to change it.
