Garden pond

Could anybody give us some advice about the legalities of renting out a cottage that has a pond in the garden please. How can we make it safe and are there any guidelines we need to be aware of?

Sorry I don't know the answer, but the legailities and guidelines probably depend where you're located, so it would help others to offer meaningful advice if you add your rental location.

The cottage is in the Cotswolds (UK) and is to be used for holiday lets.

There is a pond in the garden which we are concerned about. The pond people brought a plastic pond net and a local smithy has suggested a top to go on just under the water but has advised that it would only support young children. Neither of these are good enough in our opinion.

As far as we are concerned, the pond should be completely covered with some kind of Mesh cover or have railings around it. Not sure if holes in cover need to be of a certain size in case of entrapment....?

The cottage has its first guests on 27th May so we need to resolve this v.soon.

Any advice, really appreciated.

A fixed mesh or grille of sufficient strength to support the weight of a child, with the mesh remaining above the water surface at all times is a good idea.

The only true way to make it 100% safe is, of course, to fill it in!
