Instagram has changed its mind and no longer wishes to steal its members' photos. I think. Even those fanatically committed to sharing anything on-line that emerges from their camera's memory card might think that an organisation making money from their freely-shared pix is a bit rich. Or maybe they don't care. As always, read that pesky small print in the T+Cs.

The Telegraph:
Announcing the change of mind, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom told users: "It is not our intention to sell your photos." He didn’t say “It never was”. He didn’t even say “We never will.”

I rather preferred this approach when the news first broke:

The real world: Quit, verb, to leave (a place), usually permanently.

The internet: Quit, verb, to threaten to leave as loudly as possible, usually over something stupid, then do nothing.

Not for me, I'm afraid. To refer to people raising legimate concerns about Instagram's T+Cs as 'paranoid attention whores' and 'delusional, paranoid jackass(es)' goes beyond the boundary of reasoned comment. If Mr Siegler can't present his argument without recourse to such unpleasant phrases, he's already lost the contest.

I thought that commentator keng_ca was a bit closer to the truth in his civilised and non-abusive response to Mr Siegler:
So now Instagram says we will have the rights to sell your photos to anyone we want, but don't worry we don't plan on doing that. So you make fun of people who don't trust them, even though if they do decide to sell those photos, the users will be told "it's all in the TOS you agreed to".

This isn't about being a paranoid jackass, it's about signing away rights. And while you may be right that it would be a horrible business model, they wouldn't be the first company to employ a horrible business model.

I only use FB and twitter. Maybe one day I will say something really interesting for them to use in some sort of campaign . But do not hold your breath.
