Does anyone routinely do credit checks on prospective renters? Normally I feel that a security deposit (and my gut instinct) are sufficient, but from time to time I get inquiries that I'm not sure about. Is it worth running a credit check? Are there companies that offer this service reliably and affordably?

Can't tell you anything helpful though. I wouldn't do background checks on potential renters. If they pay the rental rate, they can stay - I don't care about their credit rating.
Like you I rely on gut instinct. I think you can find out a lot about someone's character from the correspondence leading to a rental booking.
