can I pick your brains?

Everything to do with using your own website to advertise your rental property. Design, usability, hosting, getting listed on the search engines, optimising your site, pay-per-click, etc, etc.

can I pick your brains?

Post by barbersdrove »

I belong to a group in our community that is taking on the running of our local library. We are going to create a website for the Town which will be a one stop shop for everything you need to know, hoping to attract advertisers as a way of raising money. Our problem is we do not have oodles of money, none at this moment in time in fact hence the need to raise money. :)

Does anyone have any suggestions for which website design company we would be best advised to use or can direct me to how to create it ourselves. I keep hearing about Wordpress. Is this easy to use and would it have sufficient bells and whistles for a comprehensive town website do you think?

I created my website in Wordpress and it can have all the bells and whistles you need as you add things called plug ins to add functionality. I needed help to get off the starting block and took advice along the way, however if someone has the time and patience it's perfectly possible to DIY.

You need to keep the theme and plug ins up to date; ensure the plug ins and updates you use are compatible with the version of Wordpress you're using. There's masses to read on Wordpress and plenty of forums where you can seek help.

Hope you get it all off the starting block; it sounds exciting.

Not used any of these but they are all drag and drop. No need to hire anyone one or even delve into Wordpress.

Most of the hosting companies like 1and1 who offer their own website builders online are normally very limited. You can make a basic site but don't expect too much more.

Frameworks like Wordpress have been used to make millions of sites so clearly you can create any site you wish with such a system. Even starting from a template, containing most of the tools you'll need will only cost about $50. Paying a design company to make more than a few pages is going to cost a fair bit of money.

Along with Wordpress there are many other non coding options, as already mentioned. The cheapest option would be to find someone who is fairly good with computers but doesn't need to be a coder or designer.

I think I need to either find someone experienced in Wordpress who I can shanghi to do it or I have to learn Wordpress myself.

You might find some of Liz's articles helpful if you decide to do it yourself. She talks plain English

With WP it helps if you have some knowledge of HTML in case the plug-ins do not work. Even then when I ran a blog I felt it was quite hard.
To test the website on your own PC you will need to set up a Local host (server)

(assuming your not an apple person).
There are a lot of tuts around on the web. Also look up on the likes of YouTube or Vimeo.
