Mac / PC compatibility using Word files

Post by Mountain Goat »

Excuse my ignorance, but can a Mac read a Word file written on a PC?

i.e. can .doc extension documents be read by a Mac's Word program?

In fact, Macs have been able to do that for years. To me, that's always been a big advantage of a Mac. It can deal with plenty of different Windows file types out-of-the-box, but the reverse is far from true! :)

Oh, right. So does that mean I can't read a Word document written by a Mac with my PC?

I think, but am not sure, that that depends on several things, such as the version you saved it as on your mac, and the age (in software time) of your PC.

If you want to be sure both sides can read each other, you can use the rtf format.

I have a new Mac OS X Version 10.4.6 . The word processor is called Pages but you can save any document as word doc /PDF/ RTF/ HTML or plain text so a mac user should be able to produce a doc readable by a pc user.

I love my mac :D
