When first starting a web page, you should always keep in mind that not everyone has the same screen size or resolution settings as you.

Nearly 50% of computer users use a resolution of 800x600, whilst just over 33% use 1024x768.

Here's how tansy's site looks in these two sizes .....

1024

and 800

Obviously, a big difference, and many may prefer the larger 'full screen' version unfortunately this creates problems.

If you have a 'full screen' at 1024 then if the user is viewing with an 800 setting, they'll have a scroll bar at the bottom of the page and a large portion of your webpage will be missing.

This is why many sites go for either the 'left' or 'middle' aligned column design, which is still acceptable in 1024 and fills the screen at 800.

An alternative is to go for a 'flexible' or 'stretchy' design. This means that the webpage will automatically adjust to fill the page of any screen size. (like the one here at http://www.laymyhat.com )

Sounds great, but problems can arise because the page will never look the same in different size screens. Text wrapping and an over abundance of 'plain background space are just two of the problems that can occur without careful planning of the design.

Anyone any views or preferences? Smile

I personally prefer a fixed content size. At our website I believe we have a fixed table width of 700 pixels.

I don't use 800 x 600 or even 1024 x 768, and I personally have no problem with the extra space on either side of our content. In fact, I think embedding standard high-contrast content into a mood-setting background color is one way to distinguish a site and give it personality without also making it difficult to read.

I do think you can still make a very nice page using a percent-based table/page width -- I just personally don't like the idea that my page will look different on basically every single monitor/browser window out there. Some of my text is wrapped around images, and if it were expanded out to a huge screen it would look very silly.

Besides, I also like using header images, which essentially fix a minimum page width anyway. If I had a header banner of width 700 pixels, the page couldn't be any narrower than that, and if it were much wider than that it might look strange unless the transition to the background were taken into account on the banner's edges.

Just my humble opinion. Smile

Cheers!

When I designed my own sites for my properties I just threw them together to fit my monitor - 1024 wide. I thought that those who had an 800x600 monitor would soon enough have a 1024 one.

But seeing how many people visit my sites, compared to how many make an enquiry, I am going to re-design my sites. I want to see if making the site user-friendly for 800-width monitors makes a difference. Because at the moment half of visitors aren't seeing what I want them to.

So my vote is for the full screen at 800.

After working in the internet industry for years I would always recommend optimising your site for 800 x 600. As you noted yourself a significant number of users have a resoltion of 800 x 600 or stats say about 40%. This is a sizeable proportion of your visitors which you would be ill advised to ignore.

Also don't forget the vertical scroll bar takes up space - we always work on pages being about 770 px wide.

Hope this helps Smile
