Another favorite Gmail Lab of mine is "Undo Send," which gives you five seconds after you press the send button to cancel the command and go back to editing your message. It has saved me a number of times.
MG wrote:One setting which doesn't work for us in Gmail is setting a default account, say me@mydomain.com and hoping that will always appear in From when someone receives your email. It doesn't, and it can be a nuisance.
Funny, MG, I haven't had that problem in a very long time. I assumed it was a bug that they have now fixed. Sorry to hear it's not so for you. Have you tried the obvious things like changing the default address and then changing it back?

Overall, the few small issues I've had are dwarfed by the issues I've had using other free e-mail services or even paid programs like Outlook. TTP's mention of "gmail (or another free service)" reads as very odd to me, because putting Gmail in a group with other free services implies that using Gmail is about the same as using Yahoo! or Hotmail. It does take a bit of getting used to, but once you do, Gmail is in a class by itself.

I'm a Gmail fan, too - at least since you pointed out the Canned Responses, Vrooje, and probably before.

I'd love to take the credit for that roxytoo, but I can't. Damn.

Definitely my #1 favorite lab feature. Even though it only lasts about 5 seconds, I use it at least 4-5 times a week.

Second favorite is the ability to drag and drop an attachment from your desktop onto the outbound email sender. I frequently prefer to double check the file before attaching the wrong one

Gmail is extremely powerful.

The spam function is very reliable, and I virtually never spot real mails amongst the rolex, viagra, Bank of Ghana, inheritance stuff in the spam box.

You can set gmail to pull in "real" emails ( e.g. ask-us-about-beachparadise@ scunthorpe.co.uk ) and send mails from gmail with the from label set to another email account ( e.g. important-information-about beachparadise@ scunthorpe.co.uk ).
n.b. the real email addresses have to exist.

You can then use the standard gmail functions to help with marketing :

Either set up labels for specific topics, or search on " scunthorpe.co.uk " to find all correspondence for that location.

You can also set different "subject" headings (e.g. 2008 Beach paradise enquiry from Loot ) on website email links and search on those headings - or even just "Loot", or "2008".

By funnelling various "real" email addresses through one gmail account, you can merge them for marketing purposes.

Google continuously increase the available memory to honour the slogan - "never delete an email again - just search for it ".

Mine currently says : You are currently using 1647MB (22%) of your 7476MB

I know some people who have set up a gmail account just to back up holiday photos !

Peter,
when I tried this, the recipient(*) will see:

From: myaddress@ gmail.com On Behalf Of mynameatbeachparadise(important-information-about beachparadise@ scunthorpe.co.uk)

This is clumsy, so I'm wondering if I have missed something ?

(*) I tested as recipients in gmail and hotmail

I don't find Undo Send works - just 2-3 secs delay if that.

There are gadgets around which utilise your Gmail storage as an extra 'drive' for storage. Risky, I would have thought.

I think you can change that.

Mine says -

(to another gmail account) :

from peter <peter@myownsite.com>
to petersgmail@gmail.com
date 15 July 2010 12:22
subject Test ...
mailed-by gmail.com
Signed by gmail.com

(to a yahoo account) :

From: peter <peter@myownsite.com>
To: Peter <petersyahoo@yahoo.com>

Showing full headers with Yahoo discloses the routing via Gmail.

The only thing I can see to change is setting the outgoing email from gmail to use a SMTP server at mysite. com.

Is this what you are doing ?

Not sure - I set it up long ago.

Seems to be in Settings / Accounts & Import / Send mail as

Then select -

When receiving a message: Reply from the same address to which the message was sent

e-richard,

I find that it depends on the recipient's mail server. Some (most, in my experience) of them will allow senders to pretend to be from one from-address domain when they're actually from another, so long as the sender's server is trustworthy and provides the right headers (like Gmail does). Some won't, and will always display the root e-mail address, sometimes with the "on behalf of" message. The fact that the message was sent via Gmail will always be in the full message headers, but I find that people who take the time to view those don't mind that I'm really using Gmail.

MG,

The other day, I had a longer-than-usual loading time between clicking send and the "Your message has been sent" box appearing. In fact, the delay was longer than 5 seconds, so the Undo link never appeared to me. That had never happened to me before, but I'd bet that's what is happening to you -- the loading time for the new page code is cutting into the undo countdown. I'm not sure there's a lot they can do about that, unfortunately, but I could be wrong.

Peter,

I believe I already do what you're talking about, and I also make liberal use of Gmail's label capabilities, and I use filters to automatically set labels. Whenever I get, for example, a new inquiry from VRBO, I have filters that will automatically label the message as both a "New Inquiry" and as "VRBO". If the new inquiry ends up booking, I manually add the label "Booked". When a message from our on-site property managers comes in, a filter not only labels it, but automatically forwards it to my cell phone (I do that for inquiries too).

At the end of each year, I use the search box to display various combinations of labels, in order to help me summarize my total annual inquiries and conversion rates and decide which listing sites to renew and which to release.

I have a feeling, though, that I'm preaching to the choir. :)

so a month on after shifting my enquiries to Gmail and truly loving the canned response feature i have just 2 issues...

when i reply to an email my auto signaure does not appear at the bottom of my my message but at the bottom of the entire email

secondly, how do i read emails as a standard string history like for instance you would normally do like when you read an email inYahoo or when using Microsoft Office. Gmail use these strange tabs and "quoted text" which im not very comfortable with

thanks!

On your second point, the thing is that gmail is VERY different from Outlook et al and groups emails into what they call "conversations". That's why the embedded reply is hidden behind "show quoted text".

Once you have a collection of emails back and forth inside a conversation, find the link in the top right corner that says "Expand all", and it then expands into separate emails that become the equivalent of what you are asking for.

"Conversations" are truly very different from your previous ways of thinking in Outlook, and take a lot of getting used to, but persevere. Its worth it !

Sorry, don't know the answer to signatures.
