Buying TVs in bulk, or with discount

Post by DidiB »

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and have found it to be a really useful source of information as a self-catering owner. I've done a search for this topic, but haven't found a similar one, so hope that I'm not repeating a question (apologies if I am!)

We have 10 cottages, and really need to update the TVs we have, as most of them are too small, and over the last couple of months many of them have been breaking down.

I will probably go for flatscreen TVs, mainly for the look, and also as they will be easier to move (we have guests that request we remove them from the property). Does anyone know where I can buy in bulk? I guess I'm looking for something along the lines of OutofEden for TVs! We have freeview boxes for all of our cottages, so wouldn't need ones with integrated boxes. Or if anyone has other suggestions, for example, leasing, that would be appreciated.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I buy a lot from this company:

Their service is very good and they manage to offer some very good prices.

You'll find that most TVs now have freeview receivers built in anyway.

Thanks James, it's good to know a place with good service as well as good prices.

Typical that we get the freeview boxes, and then they're not needed! Oh well, that's always the way.

We were burgled a few years ago and had to replace our - kettle, microwave, TV, video and a few other small electricals. We went into somewhere like Curry's and negotiated a deal since we were buying a lot of stuff. Worth at try?

Saying that, in the UK I'd only buy TV's from John Lewis as they give a 5 year guarantee. I don't think their prices would be negotiable but you'd have 5 years peace of mind. You can order from their internet site too.

I have a feeling that the margin on TVs is minimal (could be wrong) and buying "only" ten from a big outlet won't attract much of a discount. It might be worth trying the local retail specialist route, and seeing if you can negotiate in the sort of warranty Sue mentions. A sale of ten units is far more significant to them.
We bought all our white goods for three properties from a local independent retailer, who bettered internet prices, delivered and manhandled the equipment, and were there for backup when we had a problem. No financial saving, but better service.

After reading your comments, I think going local may be the way to go, and look for good service/warranty. I just wonder what people do to the electrical equipment in our cottages to make it break so often!

Thanks for all your help,

Flat screen TVs

Post by bentisdall »

You've probably bought them by now but that John Lewis 5 year guarantee is really worth having! Flat screen TVs are much, much less reliable than CRT ones. I just had to take our 4 year old 40in Sony Bravia TV to the dump because it was beyond economic repair. The repairman told me this was commonplace.
