Perhaps, Paolo, you could expand on your one-word answer! Also, any tips on the creation of a site map would be gratefully received. I looked at the Google sitemap thread below but couldn't fathom out how to use their site map creation program.

Fraise, it is a bit like a table of contents of your site. Large sites have them http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ See site map link near the top. Sometimes handy on larger sites if you can't find what you want. I don't have one but will do one if it helps with search engines.

Thanks for that Sue!!Won't an actual list of contents do?Think the thing I have running at the top of each page of my website is one of these? Or maybe not?

Paolo,
"Is this the shortest thread ever?"
No, one I started enjoys that record. Maybe more than one...
Best,
Alexia.

I am not following these things very carefully these days but I did read that a sitemap is useful to help a search engine spider get to all the pages on the site, and therefore hopefully index them all for the search engine. It doesn't boost you in the rankings, but it helps get the most pages included.

However, if you have a small site, 10 pages or less, and each page is linked to from the homepage, a sitemap isn't really necessary.

This one worked for me and i certainly went up the google rankings in the months after creating it. Others available of course, and I too could not understand the google map instructions...

Tudor,
Sorry to be dim, but I used the site map creator and have a whole page of html. Do I paste this into a new page called "Site Map", or what do I do with it?

Joanna

I create a new page, give it a title description etc in the head section. Then paste all the html into the body bit and hey presto - you're there!

Hi

I've been quietly following this thread.

I created a sitemap page and linked to it from each page when I couldn't get all the menu options on every page. This was a couple of years ago, and it certainly helped google find more pages.

I recently also added a URL sitemap page because google currently consistently misses 100+ pages from my site. Didn't work.

I registered with the google sitemaps service a few days ago, gave my URL, uploaded the confirmation file, but found the XML sitemap protocol too complex.

Looking today, they still miss 100+ pages, but "web pages containing .." my URL have increased from 900 to 9900 . Curious !

I've just sorted out how to do the plain text version and uploaded it. It currently says pending, so we will see.

The plain text version is pretty simple to do.

Registering your URL alone gives some interesting stats.
