Winterizing a pool

Post by Corfudeb »

We have an irregular shaped concrete infinity pool at our villa in Greece and we are unsure of the best proceedure for winterizing it. Am I correct in thinking that you should empty 1/3 of the water and that you add appropriate chemicals which will keep the water clear for the winter? We are 500m above sea level on the side of a mountain and do get some frost/snow during the winter. We are also surrounded by trees so debris is an issue, as there are storms in the winter, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to cover an infinity pool???
Any advice or guidance through the process would be gratefully received.

I was always under the impression that concrete pools had to be drained, whereas tiled pools should have water left in them.
The concrete pools here tend to get drained.

But I'm no expert, so I'm sure someone will be along soon who is!

Hi Corfudeb, our pool is also irregular and winterisation is exactly as you describe.
It doesn't look too pretty during the winter, but there you go. Scoop, scrub and Hoover the debris out in the spring.

It's a concrete pool with a tiled lining -we have been advised not to drain it too much (except for refurb) to keep it stable.

We've done it that way for years and it's OK.
