It gives you back a proper Windows desktop, which is useful when you first start, as if you can't work something out, you can go back to the old way. I'm using it less and less now.

A quick waybofngetting to the program menu is to hit the windows key and x together. This brings up a menu with programs at the top. I'm very used to Windows 8 now and like it a lot.

I'm getting there. The recovery discs are done and I am back in Chrome so am in familiar territory for emails.

Most other things I am happy to learn as I go along but couldn't cope with the email format I was being offered!

I have now had a follow up email from Shruthi in India, allegedly a follow up to my problem with drivers and sound card which they helped me with

No mention of the recovery disc creation problem which they DID help me with

Now I'm really confused. This machine theoretically comes with Office Starter but although I can see it in the programme files it is nowhere to be seen elsewhere. When I click on Office on the fancy desktop it just takes me to an invitation to purchase full blown Office.

Any ideas?

PP, is it just a trial of Office Starter? It's a few months since I got mine now, and i can't remember if I still had to activate it on the Microsoft Site. I had a 90 day trial or something similar. HAve you scrolled to the right through all the apps?

I understand it to be the full Office Starter, that was how it was sold. I had that on my defunct Packard Bell and it was adequate for my needs so I didn't think I needed to buy anything else.

It is offering me a 30 day trial of Office 2010 but if I was going to buy anything I think I would go for 365

OH struggling with it right now on his 2 day old A Aspire.

Does anyone know of a alternative to expat sheild that runs on W8?

We expected to continue to be able to watch bbc iplayer on the new laptop - with a better reception that we get on my ancient model. But now we find out expat sheild´s not compatible with W8

Going from bad to worse.

Office Starter not there. No Office at all as when I click on the icon it takes me to an 'activate' page for the 30 day trial of Office 2010. Then I can't do that because no Product Key as no Authentication Cert in the box.. Many conversations with HP later I get to the bottom of it (possibly) as they tell me that Microsoft withdrew Starter when they launched Windows 8 so the seller should never have said that it was included. On the Office 2010 front they say I can't get in because the 30 day trial has already been used up. Which presumably means I have a machine which has already been used by someone else.

I think it's going back!

But you do not have to use any Microcrap.
We use a slightly older version of WordPerfect Office, bought over the internet.
Or you can use http://www.openoffice.org/ or http://www.libreoffice.org/

When my Office trial expired, I just downloaded Open office. However, it shouldn't have been used by someone else and sold as new.
PP ,I got this laptop from Amazon. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-K55A-15-6- ... B009REFFS2
