Payment options

Post by holidaylover »

I've recently been adding my holiday let to a number of different websites and have started to get some interest from europe.

I've now been offered a booking and the potential guests have asked about how to pay. I've offered them a bank transfer into my UK account or to pay by Paypal.

I just wondered how other owners deal with different currencies and different nationalities??

I get UK renters to pay directly into my Halifax account or for euro payments directly into my Frech account. This is usually done via internet banking or a BACS or CHAPS transfer from a bank. Some UK renters actually also go into a Halifax branch.
Some Americans and Canadians use Paypal as there seems to be more difficulty using the bank transfer system and they are more used to using credit cards. I add and additional 4% to cover the paypal charges.

Thanks for your replies.

I've had UK guests paying directly into my UK account. Is it cheaper for them to pay in euros from their French account into my Spanish account?

I offer payment through my online bookings system via Paypal. I have had a couple of problems with accounts needing verifying though others seem to have had no trouble. The Paypal account should be optional , but some people have had difficulty. A French guest last year paid me by bank transfer which he seemed happy enough about. The most complicated is a UK cheque, as I don't work anywhere near my UK bank anymore, and the village Post Office has closed, making anything but online banking difficult. I have recently been asked why I charge in euros and pay the money into my French account, when I live in England, and it's simply that I need money in my account to pay our small French mortgage, and the bills. As I have to either set up a regular payment or visit my UK bank each time, why not just have a French paypal account, and transfer it that way. I add the 4% onto my rental charges (already included, so no nasty shocks).

You should establish a merchant account if possible via paypal. If you start doing a large volume of rentals you will want to imporve your velocity of deal and credit cards are key to doing that.

Granted I'm in the US so it may be different in Europe. but eversince we went to credit cards our bookings and deal velocity have increased three fold.
