Free Counter

Post by cromercrabholiday »

After three years my free CQ counter has died and just comes up with an error message on the lines of "too many visits". An e-mail to them has borne no response.

Anyone got recommendations for a replacement?

Hi

http://www.statcounter.com is the most popular stats package, and probably the best free stats except google analytics. It's free, and lets you have a 'visitor numbers' displayed if you want (optional). Plus it gives you lots of other information.

Cheers

I just got my Google Analytics invite code, not even two weeks after requesting one. So that might be worth a look.

Visitor counters on web pages

Post by dmjarvis »

Visitor counters are becoming less popular these days, and there are very few new, decent sites which include them. The problem is they don't really convey anything to your visitors because they quite often include visits from spiders, they may multi-count some single visits, and they can generally be easily reset by the web owners. So all in all they're not too reliable an indication of the site popularity. I would rather get 10 visits from highly-relevant visitors than a thousand visits from completely irrelevant visitors.

Of course, having a web server log analyser is an altogether different matter. Most decent ISP's will provide free access to basic software (such as Wusage) which will let you analyse your traffic. If you can get hold of your raw server log files you can download some free software (such as Weblog Expert Lite) which allows you to analyse your files on you own computer.

Update: now that I've had Google Analytics long enough to get some results, it is very impressive. Extremely easy to get it up and running, and the stats are, at first glance, fantastic.

I think everyone should try for an invite code. It's a free extra analysis tool -- is there any reason not to?

I need more time to really get into it !

We also use Statcounter which is an excellent 'real-time' free package. Stats are displayed to the minute.
