the way the vineyard owners do it - is to bait meat in spring with fipronil.

you can buy fipronil on line as a dog flea treatment. just search: fipronil for dogs

Thanks Lars, that is useful information. Some summers we get plagued with the blighters and others, as in 2015, wasps are almost rare. I noted the warning to bait meat but not cereals, because the latter will attract honey bees as well as wasps.

yes you're absolutely right - only bait meat! to avoid killing bees.

the fipronil is taken back to the nest and destroys the whole colony - so baiting in spring reduces the wasp population massively and throughout the year

It's very important that you make sure the baited meat is safe from pets.
