We have had a new, small, housing development of 11 homes built right next door to our holiday cottage over the past year. We started by offering our accommodation at a 50% discount, which seemed appropriate during the noisy groundworks. Gradually, my discount reduced as the works became less noisy. It was still stressful though, and I would not have wanted to have been selling the cottage for full price during the works.
Now, the building works next door have finished and we have started our own building works, renovating a second cottage (next door to the first) and adding a garden room and new porch to our own house. We had thought of closing our cottage altogether, but have instead decided to be entirely upfront about the building work, and sell weekend short breaks at a 50% discount. We also have a Monday-Friday lodger for the next couple of months. The builders have, as expected, been really noisy, and the garden looks a mess.
