pepsipuss, The Spanish law says you can only live and be a resident in Spain for a max of 2 years before you are obliged to change your D.L.
It comes from the January 2013 EU directive which allows countries to insist that foreigners resident in a member state have a driving licence with the same validity period as those issued by that state.
Both of us managed to change ours in a matter of a week. Maybe that is something to do with that there are not so many expats here or we both had Dutch Licences. Hence information was exchanged between the counties quicker.
Never try to out-stubborn your guests.

Weird that the EU hasn't standardised the regulations for member countries on something as basic as this, isn't it?

Before there can be total harmonisation on driving licences there will need to be harmonisation on driving standards.

In normal EU fashion we'll all have to drive like the Italians (or French or whoever?). :D

(With apologies to anyone who already meets the new standards.)

Oi - don't knock the French - it takes a lot of skill to drive consistently one metre off the bumper of the car in front.

Hang on, they don't do that all the time. Just until there's an oncoming truck on the other side, whereupon they can pull out to overtake you and at the last moment execute a perfect kamikaze dive between your front bumper and that of the truck, whilst nonchalantly tapping their Gauloise out the window.

Such panache. Chic alors!
