newbie to twitter

Well at last I started my twitter page.I was hopeful of one follower even if I had not got a clue.retweeting was just good luck on my part.
Anyway I seem to be getting an interesting followers.
To the point just put a tweet on about the horse racing at Beverley suddenly I have followers to do with racing within minutes.
Do you set up a system if someone tweets a subject you may be interested in and then want to follow them.
Same thing happened when I put about roast beef Yorkshire puddings.
Amazed at followers in such a short time.
