How about they didn't go to the funeral, they were coming to Toady up to aged relative at the dates specified. AR dies so journey not now necessary. They await the reading of the will, get nothing so decide to spend their days off in Baha instead.

I would be inclined to tell them I am sorry for your loss but it shouldn't also be mine
