Analytics question

Post by Ben McNevis »

I recently started with Google Analytics after using ExtremeTracking for many years.

Now, I get some indication of the "Average position" for each Google query phrase which initially struck me as really useful but..

for some phrases when I do a Google search, my target URL is not anywhere near that average position

and...

I know that Google results vary according to where in the world you are and presumably other factors so the discrepancy is understandable

and this got me thinking...

it's a count of "impressions", so if a user only looks at Page 1 of the search results, something that would have been on Page 2 never becomes an impression. So, this must mean that the "average position" is skewed heavily towards a Page 1 position to such an extent that it is fairly useless.

Or have I missed something?
Cheers, Ben
