Pool Water Scum Line

Post by gh »

Had a search on the forum but alas couldn't find anything.
I remember reading that there is a freeze that you can cover the waterline with and some members have done so.

It's for our French place though I suppose could be posted.

Could anyone point me to the various posts please.
Thanks

I think the thread you are looking for might be this one viewtopic.php?t=16893&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

We ordered ours from swimming-pool-border.com and it has made such a difference. We fitted it ourselves - very straightforward, and very easy to keep it clean ans stop the yucky stuff building up.
Regards

Anne

Hi, I was one of the people who was asking about them on the original thread. We bit the bullet and fitted one of the Border Choice Cyprus ones just before the start of last season. I must say it was a bit tricky to fit and defo harder than the company claim especially if you've got a roman end to do but after saying that we managed it after quite a bit of swearing lol and I think it's one of the best things we've done. It does exactly as the company says and any muck/dirt just wipes off dead easy using just the pool water. The company say if you've got gunk from sun lotion you can use a bit of washing up liquid on a soft sponge or if there's loads of gunk you can use a bit of Cif. I ended up just having to use Cif twice all season and you just put a tiny bit on a soft cloth and rub gently and all the gunk comes of dead easy and wait for it................... leaving no yellow/green stain at all. It really is fantastic. I think it may depend on which companies border you buy as there are complaints on the other thread that some of them are coming unstuck. The one we bought seems to have stayed stuck fine apart from a couple of corners which I've noticed straight away coz I've got my eyes on stalks checking it all the time and I've just used a tiny bit of the glue they give you to go round the edges on a match stick to stick them back no problem. We've also asked guests not to use the sun lotions known to cause the staining which I think helps but of course not all of them have cooperated. We are just so pleased and relieved that it looks like we have found a solution to the problem after eight years which was an absolute nightmare for us. After a full season of sticky guests it looks just as good as it did when we fitted it. I'd say defo go for it!!!!! If anyone's got any questions please just ask away!

Careful using surfactants (cleaning materials like washing up liquid, CIF etc) These lower the surface tension of the water and allow you to remove dirt, they do exactly the same to the dirt trapped in your filters and can flush nasty stuff out into the pool including bacterial biofilms containing nasty pathogens that can make people ill.

Probably best to follow up any such cleaning with a shock dose of chlorine to kill off any pathogens that chlorine can kill (not all things are killed by chlorine) and also the chlorine will burn out the cleaning compounds and get your filter back into proper working condition quicker.

Great info Gill J thanks for that.

Called Border Choice and they do deliver to France, come springtime when we open up the pool we plan to put on the new border then.

Again thanks to all for your help.

You're more than welcome. With regards to using the washing up liquid or Cif I was a bit worried about this as I had read that is wasn't very good for your pool water so I spoke to the company and they said as you are only using a tiny bit it shouldn't cause a problem but just to be on the safe side I only used the Cif after we had done a back wash and the level was down a bit. Also I use 2 buckets of water & 2 sponges, 1 for the Cif sponge and the other for the clean sponge for rinsing off. This way hopefully very little if any of the Cif gets in the pool water. We are really mega fussy about the pool and have an auto dosing system and also use a meter to check it's doing it's job correctly. If there's any sign of the 'spent cartridges' as I call them which is the nasty stuff that the chlorine leaves behind after it's done it's job the pool is shocked to get shut of it. We only had to shock it twice this last season. Once when we opened it after the winter and again before we put it to bed so I don't think it can be causing too much of a problem. Our pool is always super sparkly which is often commented on by guests and now we have a super sparkly waterline as well. Happy days!

Reviving this thread as I've just ordered a borderchoice frieze ready for our next trip out to the house. It hasn't come yet, but they've sent the fitting instructions, and it does indeed seem trickier than I was expecting from the website. In the preparation section it says to clean first with liner degreasant - looks like it comes in a spray bottle. Could anyone recommend a suitable specialist product to use for this - preferably something that can be bought on-line and delivered to UK before we go as we won't have a great deal of time while there and the local pool shops tend not to be very well stocked/limited opening hours (and whilst we can speak French well enough for everyday stuff we do have language difficulties explaining something specialist). Thanks.

We just used one of the ones we had in as we had tried loads of different ones before we went for the border. There are loads of different makes and you can usually get them in the bricos as well as the pool shops. Just make sure you get one with acid in as you need that to make sure you get rid of all the grease. Also don't forget to go over it with alcohol before you fit the border as the instructions say which you can also get from the bricos. One tip which we found after fitting the first few pieces is to hold the pieces up against were you are fitting them before you take the backing off and glue round the edges and mark the liner with a pen in the corners exactly where you want them to go as this helps you keep them level & stop them running up or down coz once they're stuck they're stuck & there's no way you can just slide them into position. Hope this helps. It's not as easy as they claim and you may well feel the need to swear a bit but it's defo worth it in the end.

Gill, thanks for those tips. Good idea about marking the position on the liner first. Will try bricos first for the degreaser - always have to spend a lot of time there anyway!. (.... and I fully expect a significant amount of swearing while fitting :) there was a certain amount just reading the instructions  ) Fingers crossed

Just reading Gill post, be careful using neat acids on liners, they don't like it.
One of the best (so far) of the water line cleaners I have used (they all make wildly exaggerated claims)
Is Champion scumline cleaner, you should be able to order that on-line, another Brenntag product.

No not neat acid Teapot just one of the waterline cleaners that contain it. We don't use any of them now though with having the border, just a tiny bit of washing up liquid or Cif on a soft cloth if it needs it but after a back wash & when the water level is down. I think asking the guests if they wouldn't mind using the Ambre Solaire Dry Mist sun stuff instead of the thick gloopy creams does also help loads.

I have my border sections, and applying them is on my 'to-do' list: is it easier from within the pool, or hanging over the edge? I don't think my back will enjoy the latter, so I'm thinking of lowering the water level which will allow me to stand to do half the pool (and I might float on a chair for the rest...)
