So I added a couple of photos to my FB page after we got back from staying at our place. They were of the beach so I tagged (if that is the right expression) Porthtowan Beach. When I checked the Porthtowan Beach fb page, there they were with 'Seascape Porthtowan at Porthtowan beach' on them. I'm pretty sure I have had a few page views and likes from people seeing them there.

A good way to get exposure? Or is this against fb rules? Not sure if I'm allowed to tag places as my page or not?

No reason why not. You tagged the correct place and you did it as your page, hence why it had your page name and the place name. Sounds a good idea.
