Cleverer and cleverer

Post scam emails to warn other rental owners, or if you are not sure if an enquiry is genuine, put it up here and see what others think.

At what point would you have known this was a scam?

I haven't noticed the Monday phenomenon, but it makes sense Johnel. Am I sad enough to look through all my past booking inquiries and see which emails were sent on a Monday/Tuesday?

:D Probably!

Good Day,

I need to book reservation for 5 guests coming on a vacation to your
property and the dates will be on August 29th, to September 7th 2007.
However, what they need is 3 rooms.

Let me know if you have availability and the total amount involved for the
whole services including breakfast and taxes for 9 days, which they have
to stay in your property. Get back to me if the dates mentioned above
are free, so that we can book reservations immediately. Thank you and
have a nice day.

Kind Regards,

Dr. Mel Mann

The interesting thing about this post is that I am not the owner
or operator of any sort of lodging or accomodation-- I operate
a store selling gelato (Italian ice cream) in Silver City, New
Mexico, USA.

I wrote back as follows:

Please explain how you got this address and how you got the
impression that I run some sort of a guest house. Nothing could be
further from the truth.

I received the following reply:

It was recommended to me by a friend.
Could you please advise availability and cost.
Thanks for the quick response.
I shall be waiting for your swift reply.

I responded indicating that I did not have accommodations and suggesting
that he visit my website in order for him to clearly understand what type
of business I was in. Note that all of this took place before I though to
Google "Dr. Mel Mann." Now that I've seen this board and another similar
to it that also showed messages from this individual, I am glad to know
just what he's up to.

Isn't it amazing how these people use the Internet to perpetrate their
crimes but never stop to think that people will use the selfsame Internet
to check on them?

Your right of course :!:
but its also amazing how many people do get caught...and of course they only need a tiny percentage to fall for it to be well rewarded for a few minutes work....
We are lucky on here as we have all the other Forumers to give us advice etc...[and people like you giving us examples of Scams  ]
But when I was first starting out and before I found LMH :( ..
I would have been so chuffed to get a booking I wouldnt have considered the fact it wasnt genuine...

BTW
Rereading this thread we did meander off a bit in those days didnt we[OTT  ]..but I thought what was said was interesting..Dont know if it ever got a post of its own..If it didnt I could start one theres some helpful info here I think

Ros

There is a place called West Challow near Wantage in Oxfordshire - postcode looks genuine as well
so he has done a bit of research but just got too many typos to be convincing!
