This email pinged in this afternoon (Sunday) :
"We arrived yesterday, and thank you for arranging the house and additional provisions.
We had an accident involving the car today which has caused the pool lining to tear and some of the stone slabs at the near side of the pool to break.
The car has been recovered and no one has been seriously hurt. Please do let me know how you wish to proceed regarding the repairs as I am happy to coordinate them from here"

Yes, a car in a pool. A first for us in 26 years of pool caring for umpteen clients. No steep slope down to it, and so far no idea how it happened as the person who hired the car has been taken to hospital for a check-up. One of the other guests said 'he just went to unlock the car as we were all preparing to go out to lunch and it lurched forward and he couldn't stop it'.

And it's only the start of the season.....

You will neeed to ensure repairs are done without delay, as presumably you have new guests arriving soon. This may mean repairs need to be done before insurance companies can authorise their own contractors, and to be honest, you may prefer to use people you already know.

Do try and get more than one quote if you can - your present guests may pay for the repairs now and try and submit an insurance claim later.
It is unbelievable though, and likely to involve a lot of inconvenience for you one way or another. I hope you can either supervise the repairs yourself, or have someone reliable who can do this for you. I don't think I would like to trust the guests to put it right, even though they have been upfront about it so far.

It's not our own pool. We are a property management company with 26 years of experience of pool care. My OH manages most crises and breakdowns himself but this is something else! Yesterday afternoon I phoned our trusted pool specialist/installer and he's coming over first thing this morning.
The water is still blue and clear, if not actually sparkling, but then there has been a lot of disturbance in the water Rolling Eyes
The pool liner is getting old, but there was no need to replace it this year nor maybe next.... until now?
As to the guests' insurance, it was a hire car. Was it faulty? An electronics problem? Who sues who?
To complicate matters further it was not a standard booking of the property, the owner had gifted the week to a charity 'do' and one of the guests had 'bought' it.
The guests have accepted liability, they and the owner are all lawyers so the legal aspects will be up to them.
On the practical side, I can probably offer them the use of a pool nearby this week in the heatwave (somewhere where they cannot drive a car in Laughing ), and there is a gap of a couple of weeks before the next guests.
It's all part of life's rich pattern......and all in a day's work (even on a Sunday) for a property manager.
