Has anyone had any dealings with ING bank? I have been told by a potential guest that ING bank need IBAN and BIC to transfer money. My account number and sort code are not enough, he says. I googled ING and made a search for Personal banking, but nothing came up. Scam?

Why are you thinking scam?????
ING bank is a Dutch international bank/finance/insurance business. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ING_Group
To make any international banking transfer you have to supply IBAN and BIC. Never done it any other way.

Your IBAN and BIC should be on your statement. Every account has them and they are necessary for international transfers.

Perfectly normal request & he can't pay you without them.

Hello Jemima,
Try this link - it gives a good explanation.

Thanks all, I just felt a bit uneasy but I got his address and he is in the Netherlands so that explains it.

We have been with ING in France for 3 years as their charges are lower than the traditional banks here. They are legit!

I am still left wondering why you thought this was a scam?

it's normal to put IBAN and BIC codes in order to allow payments by bank trasfer...
Im not sure it's the same in every European states, but in Italy I found my BIC code just searching for my bank name online.
it's just a international code for (international) bank transfer.
I always give both codes to my guests when they made payment by bank transfer.

OK, imagine that you have never heard of ING, as the OP admitted.
Imagine that you have never heard of IBAN and you have no idea what BIC means.
Imagine that all your previous guests were from the UK and paid by bank transfer within the UK or even by cheque.

Then its plausible that the email received may sound odd.
And when we're talking about sending money then scams rapidly enter the thought process.

I don't know Jemima, and I have no wish to insult her or pass any judgement, but all of these are possible.

Not everyone is as wise as you :D

e-richard has described exactly my thoughts, although I have heard of IBAN and SWIFT. ING I have never heard of before.
The guest to be has an English name and email address, but did not say he was writing from Holland so I thought it strange he was paying from a foreign bank.

..........and isn't this forum so that we can all support each other and learn as we go along?
(I would hate to think I couldn't ask a question in case someone thought it was a stupid one.)
We are all grateful for the chance to hear others expertise and for the support offered by people who are usually complete strangers to us.
