Hot Tub ?

Post by whirlybird »

Hi

The agent we are using keeps on about hot tubs, every time i see the.
I consider hot tubs to be a bacteria soup, just waiting for the next victim.
If it were just for me there would be no problem, but a string of people ?
What do you think ?
Do you have them and empty for each new guest ?

Show me the way.....

We stayed in a holiday park where our cottage had one and every day someone came round and checked it and added chemicals and took samples to ensure it was safe.

If you own a holiday park, then this is feasible, otherwise it's going to be too much hassle/too expensive.

Water temperature is the IDEAL level for legionnaires disease and other serious bacterium. Read the HSE 2017 government regulations on hot tubs and spa pools in holiday lets. It's put me off for life. I'm informed that additional regulations on cleaning are coming in this year. 2 known prosecutions last year for deaths related to hot tubs.

Anyway, even if I wanted to have one, my septic tank could not cope with hot tub discharge.

If the agent thinks they’re such a great idea, maybe they could tell you all about the H&S requirements, upkeep and maintenance (see Giraffe and newtimber’s comments...) It would make for an interesting conversation, especially if you had a good read through the regs referenced by Giraffe before you spoke with them...

Yes they have to be emptied, scrubbed, refilled and reheated at every changeover.

Indeed. So here’s a question - do you really want people whose idea of a good holiday is sitting all day in a tub of bacteria soup as your guests?

Can't see the attraction myself if I'm honest. Is it really that relaxing/refreshing to sit in a tepid bath sharing who knows what with your co-bathers whilst just sitting around having a chinwag?
For any increased rental revenue there is a fairly high initial outlay & ongoing maintenance to consider as well as ever changing H&S regs. The agent may think it's a great idea but those won't be his/her problem either.
Each to their own but not for me.

Through my work I have started working with a company that hire hot tubs on short term rental. In the not too distant future I can see an option being given to hire a hot tub and be forwarded directly to the supplier so the holiday let owner does not get involved.

Hi
Yes, we have one near us that does the same. I had considered that as an option, but we too are on a septic tank which could possibly overload the system until it has soaked away. But, even if another company came to collect, i think they would just plug the plug out, leaving a wet garden for the next guests.
In the right place, I think this is a great solution, the almost 'disposable' hot tub.
But, people are unlikely to pay 'extra' on top of their holiday cost if it can be included elsewhere. I can see that a certain percentage of the population may find it appealing. With what we have here, and where we are, I will focus of the 'hot tub non-lovers group'.

We wouldn't have one even if we were on site. I've stayed in a Forest Holidays cabin with a hot tub and someone came around every day to check the chemicals which isn't an option for off-site owners. Then I stayed with a big group at a large house with hot tub and pool and I was very suspicious of the hot tub maintenance (or lack of it), even though that owner was on-site.

I think they're best suited to hotels and holiday parks with full time staff or luxury properties where guests are paying a premium for high standards of maintenance.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has experience of installing a hut tub and whether they've been able to increase their prices enough to make it worth the extra costs and hassle.

A FB holiday forum nearly all ask for hot tub.

More trouble than they're worth for the extra cash, I think - not that I can have one anyway, I dread to think what the septic tank would make of the chemicals!

I used to own a company which emptied septic tanks, that part doesn't bother me as most people use bleech and chems anyway. Having to empty water too often would.
Its interesting that so many people put 'Hot tub' on their wish list, maybe without thinking about who or what has been put in it previously.

Why are you surprised? Having been an ex waste water man then you would realise that once something is flushed folks just do not give a damn as to what happens next. How their actions affect the process.

Yes, but not everything gets flushed straight away....sometimes it stays in the hot tub
Looks like some people know this but still want one when they go away.
