contamination control

Post by costa-brava »

Just seen a new law coming into effect 1st January. Traffic in Barcelona is to become more strictly controlled. At the moment vehicles registered before 2000 have theoretically been banned from the city on high pollution days. As from 1st Jan we have to apply in advance and pay 2€ for each day (max of 10 per year).
The restriction includes all of Barcelona city and the "Rondas" (that circle round the outskirts). The motorways seem to be OK.
It will also include foreign vehicles.
I have a Spanish car with a very low mileage but it was first registered in November 1999. So I'm clobbered. My favourite route to the airport is the Ronda Littoral down the coast. Clobbered again!
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are not affected and it only affects 7AM to 8PM on workdays.
Maybe the silver lining is that old second hand cars will come crashing down in price so I might find a Beetle or a camper van at a silly price.
I'm fairly sure Madrid will be similar and Malaga must be on the cards too.

Not going to stop the burning of the plastic waste containers then?
