Furniture & fire labels

Post by KarenP »

so we are going through the purchase of a house and are now looking at furniture. We had wanted leather chesterfields sofas (second hand) but do they need to have the fire safety/retardant labels ? tia

Hi

This is from the Visit Britain site:

you need to comply with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988.
All furniture (new and second-hand) in your self-catering accommodation that is covered by the regulations must comply with certain safety tests.

Hope that helps

Thank you for your reply, but how would I prove they have passed the tests if they are second hand?

I have no idea of the answer to that, I bought new to cover myself against issues.
At the end of the day, if anything does happen they will look at you and what you have done to prevent an incident.
I know lots of people who don't follow the guidelines.

Many sellers won’t accept furniture without the relevant fire notices , even charity shops will refuse to take furniture without the warranty.

Not worth the risk in my mind, there is enough available new or with the relevant guarantees for reasonable costs which all become tax deductible at some point.

Edited to add:
As a holiday home owner you need to comply with a lot of legislation, pretty much most of this concerns the safety of your guests.
Would you want to stay somewhere where the owners cut corners for your safety....???
