Keith,

Sorry for the double posting... I just actually looked at your page :) and did a shift+refresh (which forces the browser to ignore the cache and reload all images) and it still took a while for things to download. Your home page image, for example, could easily be re-sized to a width of 700 pixels without sacrificing anything about the way it looks when you load it on the page. Right now it's over 1000 pixels wide; you're not displaying it at full size but it still has to load the full image.

I also suggest you make your thumbnails larger in the details page... you have a section where your code looks like this:

Code: Select all

<H3 ALIGN="CENTER">The large farmhouse kitchen is fully equipped <A HREF="kitchen.jpg"><IMG SRC="kitchen.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=100 HEIGHT=49></A>and
  has a large table for eating & an open fireplace.<A HREF="diningkitchen.jpg"><IMG SRC="diningkitchen.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=100 HEIGHT=49></A>
  A door leads to the main patio<A HREF="patio.jpg"><IMG SRC="patio.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=100 HEIGHT=49></A>
  and the kitchen also opens directly onto the sitting room. <A HREF="sitting room.jpg"><IMG SRC="sitting room.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=100 HEIGHT=49></A>
  There is also a study,<A HREF="study.jpg"><IMG SRC="study.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=100 HEIGHT=49></A>
utility room off the kitchen as well as a seperate laundry room.</H3>
I suggest changing it to something resembling this:

Code: Select all

<CENTER>
<A HREF="kitchen.jpg"><IMG SRC="kitchen.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=200></A> &nbsp; <A HREF="diningkitchen.jpg"><IMG SRC="diningkitchen.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=200></A><BR CLEAR=ALL>
<H3>The large farmhouse kitchen is fully equipped and
has a large table for eating & an open fireplace.</H3>

  <A HREF="patio.jpg"><IMG SRC="patio.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=200></A> &nbsp; <A HREF="sitting room.jpg"><IMG SRC="sitting room.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=200></A><BR CLEAR=ALL>
<H3>A door leads to the main patio and the kitchen also opens directly onto the sitting room. </H3>

 <A HREF="study.jpg"><IMG SRC="study.jpg" BORDER=0 WIDTH=200></A><BR CLEAR=ALL>
<H3> There is also a study, utility room off the kitchen as well as a separate laundry room.</H3>
</CENTER>
That should give you images with captions.

However, please be aware that I haven't tested this because I don't have your images. So you might test this yourself first, before deleting the old code.

Cheers!

Re the comment on using the Photoshop Save As function. Yes this is great but please don't save Photos as .gif A gif is meant for a graphic & not a photo as it compresses an image's file size by reducing the number of colours used. You can try using it for logos & other clip art.

For photos, use .jpg. In the Photoshop Save As function you can set it up to show 4 variations & try out the different options to compare their file size & quality. I would normally have photos at a maximum dimension of 300 pixels wide by 200 or 225 (depending on the proportions of the image). I wouldn't normally go larger than a 20k .jpg. There is a function within the Photoshop Save For Web that lets you set the preferred File Size & it then sets the compression accordingly. Otherwise you are setting the compression & looking at the File Size afterwards.

Hope that's as clear as mud...

Has the PNG file format made any progress towards replacing the JPEG and GIF file formats? Much was hoped for it when I was last around but I haven't noticed it being mentioned here.

It hasn't made much progress that I know of... it's still around and as far as I know browsers can read it... it just hasn't caught on. Someday I'll do a site entirely with png images just to see if it's any better or worse. :)

Optimize to File Size in Photoshop

Post by HolidayWebs »

The file size function is very discreet - I found it by chance. In the Save for Web window there is a little triangle on the right above the word 'Optimized'. Click on the triangle & you get the 'Optimize Menu'. Select 'Optimize to File Size' & enter the size e.g. 20k & then OK & it will then set the jpg compression for you.

Just to answer your questions above:
I used to save photos as jpeg but notice this system saves them as gif size 96k 35secs at 28.8kps
does this mean it will take 35secs to load which still does not seem too fast
That's right, and 96kb is still much too big, that homepage pic wouldn't be discernibly worse at 25kb. As noted above, don't use GIFS except for graphics and logos.
How will you know if its working as they will now be in your cache as well as Izzys
As vrooje says, you can do this by hitting your Shift key and the Refresh or Reload icon in the browser's toolbar. If Shift doesn't do it, try Ctrl, it varies by browser.
When writing replies such as this is it possible to look back at the forum without losing what I'm typing
No! You will lose your post.
Just thought I suppose I could do it in word and paste it is that what you do??
That's the best solution.

Also, you said that you tried to put larger pics on the page but couldn't - now you have Dreamweaver you can do that very easily with some basic tables to split up the page into different areas.

Bonjour from just down the road from Le Moulin de Jarrige in the Lot-et-Garonne. I'm trying to repay the feedback I received by doing the same for others so here goes for your site - nothing technical from me I'm afraid!

I liked the photo on the home page and the clear menu. I also liked the content of the photos in the gallery - you had created an atmosphere with the addition of things like the loaf of bread and by having the table set for a meal - it just looks like someone is calling those sunbathers over from the pool for lunch.

I did have some problems reading the text - I found the change of colours on different pages confusing fo the poor aging eyesight. The white backgrounds were definitely best for me. On the availability pages I would find it easier if the booked or optioned periods were in blocked colour rather than the dates then I could see at a glance.

The property looks great and your site would really make it to my options list if Iwas lookig for a holiday.

Keith,

By re-sizing the pages, what do you mean exactly? Do you mean making the pages a fixed width so that you know what it will look like on all browsers? Or, something else?

Cheers,
