I just wondered if any of you have used a Blog to promote your holiday home?

I have a few blogs and have found it much easier to market than a business website, and especially if you use software like;

www.wordpress.com
www.blogger.com

These are free and are reletavily easy to set up.

With a new domain name, it can take up to 12 months to get any visitors from Google for popular search words, but with the free blog sites above.

Yes, I have a blog, and you're right, within a couple of weeks, I was appearing on page one of google for the search term "Normandy Gite", something I was never able to achieve with my normal website. Smile

Only trouble is, you have to keep it up to date, otherwise you drop out, as I have found to my cost. Sad

Wow, that is one of the nicer blogs I've seen promoting a home.

Yes, with a blog you do have to regularly maintain it which is the downside, but like you mention it's much much easier to market a blog than it is to market a website.

People seem to link to blogs easier than link to websites.

Aww shucks!!! Embarassed Embarassed Thanks for the vote of confidence...

Actually, I did it as a result of discussions about blogs here on LMH, it was quite a hot topic about a year ago, when I first created it.

I never got round to installing wordpress onto my PC, and just used a standard template, because

a) I didn't think most potential customers would notice or care whether or not I had used a standard template as long as the information they needed was there

b) I knew that if I did start to design my own template, I would get so engrossed and life's too short! Wink

Anyway, I've shown you mine, let's see yours then!!!

Yes, having your own domain name to host your blog means you have much more flexibility, but with a free application like Wordpress, you can start to get traffic pretty quickly.

I'm creating a blog for my dads holiday home in Torrevieja, so I'll let you see when it's complete Smile

For me, the problem with blogs is the way that, when you add something, you move away from the the heading information. And alsthough I've had this one and another one for a while, I'm not aware of much traffic on either of them.

I've started one, but haven't had much time recently to do anything more to it.

What I do is: Every time I add a new entry to my blog, I then go back in and change the date/time of my "Welcome" posting, so it jumps back to the top of the list Very Happy

You go into 'customise' and then 'add elements'.

There's not much about WordPress you can't find in the Codex and if something is still elusive, the Forum gives you a few thousand enthusiasts and their ecletic knowledge.

Davey, what are you using? Wordpress or blogger? If it's WP I can't help. If it's Blogger then when you go into edit mode you will see a tab marked customise, and when you go into that you will then see elements. When you get into elements you will have choices about what kind of element you want, and whereabouts you want it.

But are you absolutely set on using a blog? Why don't you set up a website? I don't know how to use HTML beyond the very basic level, but if you use Microsoft Office Live you can set up a free site without HTML and without the need to find a host - they provide it. The templates are a touch clunky and won't, for instance, allow you to wrap text which I find frustrating, but for a beginner they do a damn good job.

This is what I did with MS Office Live. www.WatercoloursinSpain.co.uk

As I say it's not perfect but it's better than what I can manage with a blog. I'm reasonably pleased with it and it's EASY.

Have a look.
