Interesting tip to avoid keyloggers when using a credit card

The place to discuss anything to do with computers, software, hardware, no matter how basic or technical. We all use this stuff, but we don't always understand it!

Interesting tip to avoid keyloggers when using a credit card

Post by Mountain Goat »

This came off a geeks' newsletter, to avoid keylogging viri:

If you are making a purchase via credit card, I believe you can avoid keyloggers stealing your number by the copy and paste method. Basically you write the credit card number in Notepad or something similar, copy it and use Ctrl V to paste the number into the credit card number field. That way keyloggers cannot read the number

and the rather obvious, in retrospect, answer:

Yes, but keyloggers allegedly copy every keystroke on your
computer, so writing it into Notepad or any other program
may still see it copied into the keylogger program.

I believe what is effective, and is usually carried out on any purchase is when you enter the dates of validity of the card, you don't type it in - you may notice you select the month and year from a drop down menu, so no keystrokes are made then, and you need this data as well as the credit card number for the purchase or withdrawal of funds to be valid.

I don't know much about keyloggers -- are they very common?
