Wikia was relaunched recently, and it can be fun to play around with your SEO and get instant results.

If you're not on Page 1 already for your keywords, add your site (top right) and you appear near the top on a repeat search. Not sure how long before you drop, or perhaps you can submit regularly?

Seriously cool, but we need a guru to tear this concept to shreds. Or maybe not?

This could be a great way to spend your days. Imagine adding your site in every category you want, several times a day, forever!

Seriously this could get you some traffic if:

- there are real searchers out there on wikia looking for your chosen search term

- you don't have too many competitors adding their own sites to the same category

I'll play with it today and see what traffic I can get

It's fun, but I'm not convinced.

Could they cookie you and then every familiar search you do is giving 'fake' results?

In other words, targeted searches according to who is doing the searching?

Hi Mountain Goat (can I call you Mountain?)

I was suspicious about cookies too (great minds think alike) so I cleared mine and checked from a different IP address. Same result.

In plain English this just means that it looks like they always show the same search results to everyone, and don't mess with them to make it look like your site is higher than it actually is...

I'll be checking the search results later on to see if it generated any traffic

OK here are the results from the Southern California jury (only European members will get this Eurovision joke)

I added my site to the vacation rental results and it appeared in the #1 position

It's still there today (can anyone else see it?)

I've had zero visits to my site from www.wikia.com

What's the conclusion? I'm guessing there aren't many people submitting to or searching in the vacation rentals category, so right now its not much use for vacation rental traffic.

If you look under SEO you'll see sites appearing and disappearing every minute. Clearly this is a place for SEO people to try to advertise their sites!

Has anyone else tried using it in Firefox? Nothing happened when I searched - I had to switch to IE7.

It's awful. It is so open to abuse that the results are already filling up with spam.

What a bizarre site.

Bottom line is, it doesn't matter how many top placements you get, if it doesn't bring traffic...

Well, I took a look using my favourite keyword and I was listed as No2 below Wikipedia.

Don't know how I got there - I guess they must use other search engines as a base ?

That's funny - I had assumed you only get on the list if you post a site - ie your own!! Maybe someone was kind enough to put it on for you...

I don't think I'll be wasting too much time with wikia.

I think someone has to suggest a site, as you say, Doc. But I'm not going back to check.
