Hi Gemini

Advertising costs on sites vary a great deal. However I would say that you do get what you pay for. A website that is only charging 35 pounds per annum, is probably new and is therefore trying to be competitive - but the question is how high do they come up on the search engines? I advertise on Holiday rentals, who are very high in the listings for my part of the world. I pay 155 pounds sterling a year and it is fantastic value for money. I would suggest doing several searches using key words relevant to your area and then advertise with the site that consistenly comes out on top!

Good luck!

We advertise on Visit France (about £150 per year) and a French site - Pour les Vacances (about 70 euros per year). We're also on a couple of free sites which have generated the occasional booking.
Our total advertising budget, therefore, is less than the cost of one week's rental in low season, and we're very happy with the bookings that we get. We're also quite new to this, but have already got repeat bookings for next year, and some from recommendations and word of mouth - this is what we're really aiming for. We have friends with properties in Spain and Florida who have found that, in the past couple of years, they have had to market much more aggressively and keep their prices relatively low, so I suppose that it depends where your property is.

It does depend on where your property is, how competitive a market you are in. But it underlines how cheap it is to advertise on listing sites that Maggie is happy with her bookings and her marketing budget is less than one week's rental in the low season.

I am paying about 3% of my gross income on marketing - mostly on listing sites and some on pay-per-click. The results are excellent - about 11 months booked this year. I think that's testament to the power of the internet for us owners.

And I'd also be happy if it were 5%. Wouldn't anyone?
