I've always thought of gite as a purely French word. Is it used in other French-speaking countries as well? It's interesting to see this thread pop up again. Over the past few months (since moving to the UK) I've had several specific moments where I've been very grateful to this forum for non-rental...

I haven't gotten any notice of a change of terms, but then I stopped taking damage deposits a couple of seasons ago, so I may not have gone over whatever limit they've set to trigger the change Nightowl did.

PayPal does not give me the option to decline a payment -- it just deposits the money into my account. Perhaps that's because I set up a button the guests can click instead of having them manually enter my e-mail address; I'm not sure. I'm puzzled by the apparent consensus here that PayPal doesn't l...

Using photos from a mobile in a pinch? (With App help)

Hi all -- it's been a while since I was last here! I've now moved quite a bit closer to our holiday rental and last week I was able to go there for a visit when we had a cancellation. I tried to go strictly as a guest: no paint touch-ups, let the gardener pull the weeds, etc... and our dSLR that we ...

The legal battle translates to the US:

Gay couple sue Hawaiian bed and breakfast for discrimination
Some interesting differences between the two cases. But also, the B&B owners appear to be unpermitted. So they may be in some trouble either way.

What does your insurance policy say about this? Not sure you'd be covered and if you're not, it may not be worth taking the risk.

My turn! Received my first cold call from AOV today. The man made a point of mentioning that he was calling from California and initially made it sound like he was looking to rent my house for his own holiday. When I asked him if that was the case, he said he was calling on behalf of his renters -- ...

Most browsers give users the option of requiring permission before accepting cookies. I've used this feature for years in Firefox and it's quite enlightening to know who is trying to set a cookie when I visit a site. Using this feature makes it apparent very quickly just how prevalent cookies are. A...

I have not done any kind of rigorous comparison, so I can't say for sure. Practically speaking, I don't think it's any different from stating that the deposit is non-refundable from the start (assuming the client is willing to book under those terms). If someone gave me a non-refundable deposit two ...

It's a bit further north than Beaune or Dijon, but Le Relais Bernard Loiseau in Saulieu is lovely and has a three-Michelin-star restaurant on the premises.

They do have a restaurant in Beaune as well, but not a hotel.

When people book more than a year in advance I usually offer to make the deposit refundable until the 1st of January of the year their reservation is in. If they cancel before that, they get their money back and I still have plenty of time (including the peak bookings season) to re-book the week. It...

I believe that you can force the "Open With..." option to appear upon right-clicking by holding down the shift key. Once there, you can check a box to make your choice the default. You may have to do this within the Explorer window (to bring one up, press the start menu button + E on your ...

Wow, LV, I had no idea the reviews weren't shared in both directions. That seems like a serious technical flaw and something FK should work on correcting.
